Biography of James D. Smith
Mt. Peak, Texas
James Smith was a private in the United States Army Air Corps. He was killed in a training accident on September 28, 1941 at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. The plane in which he was flying crashed while trying to land during a severe thunderstorm.
Before entering the Army, he lived with his mother and father on their farm at Mt. Peak, and attended high school at Midlothian. He was captain of the football team in 1940, and volunteered to serve his country following graduation.
He is listed on the Ellis County Veterans Memorial.
