1136th Platoon, 1st Recruit Battalion

James Wesley "Airdale" Goodwin is on the second row from the top at the extreme right. William Thomas "Dooney" Pierce, Jr. is on the front row to the left of the platoon sergeant, Sergeant  B. T. Groce. Joe Riley Crow is on the front row to the right of the platoon corporal, Corporal M. K. Mangan. 

On December 3, 1942 Airdale, Dooney and Joe joined the 1136th Platoon, 1st Recruit Battalion, Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. They completed boot camp on January 23, 1943 in a platoon of 61 recruits. The three best friends volunteered for Marine Paratroopers. On the 23rd they were transferred from Recruit Depot and joined Company A, Parachute Training School, Camp Gillespie, Marine Corps Barracks, San Diego, California.
