Biography of Leon Menges
Waxahachie, Texas
Leon Menges was born on November 3, 1916. He was one of seven children born to Mr. and Mrs. M. P. Menges of Italy, Texas. He grew up in Italy attending public school there before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps the latter part of 1940.
Private Menges was in the Philippines on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, the Philippines and many other targeted areas in the Pacific. He served in the 28th Material Squadron at Clark Field on Luzon northwest of Manila.
He was taken prisoner by the Japanese, and died in a POW camp in the Philippines from acute pneumonia on February 5, 1943.
A Memorial service was held at the Main Street Christian Church in Waxahachie for Leon Menges. He was reburied on November 13, 1947 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas in Plot M9. He is listed on the Waxahachie Daily Light Honor Roll and the Ellis County Veterans Memorial.
