Biography of Ercy Weldon Dewberry

Ercy Dewberry was a second lieutenant in the United States Army Air Corps. He was a fighter pilot stationed at Ephrata Army Air Base in Ephrata, Grant County, Washington located in Central Washington between Spokane and Seattle. The terrain around Ephrata is desert and rolling hills. The flat lands on which the air base set has an elevation of 1,275 feet above sea level. In April of 1944 the 4th Air Force took over the base to train fighter pilots in P-38s, P-63s and P-39s. On a training flight from Ephrata Army Air Base on August 9, 1944 Lt. Dewberry's plane crashed, and he was killed.
He was the son of Ernest Clifton “Cliff” and Essie Mae (Patman) Dewberry. He was born on December 5, 1924 in Arlington, Tarrant County, Texas. He lived near South Prong with his parents, and attended Waxahachie High School in his freshman and sophomore years. He completed his public school education graduating high school in Grand Prairie, Dallas County, Texas. He is buried in Southland Cemetery in Grand Prairie. He is listed on the Ellis County Veterans Memorial.
